Becoming a PFI Freediver Instructor is a major step in your freediving journey. This course is designed for experienced divers who want to teach their own programs, mentor new students, and represent PFI’s high standards in education, safety, and professional conduct. You’ll learn how to manage the full teaching environment, from classroom delivery to open-water coaching, while building the leadership and technical skills required to run courses confidently and effectively.

Minimum age to participate is 18. Candidates must already hold active certifications as a PFI Intermediate Freediver, PFI Freediver Supervisor, and PFI Assistant Instructor, and must have a current medical clearance for freediving.

What you’ll learn in the Freediver Instructor course
The Freediver Instructor course is organized into three main phases.
#1. Knowledge development
In the classroom, you’ll learn how to teach, evaluate, and support freedivers at multiple skill levels, including:

- How to present theory lessons clearly and confidently
- Structuring student learning for classroom, confined water, and open water
- Applying PFI Standards & Procedures to real teaching situations
- Understanding the components of an Open Water Rig and how to assemble it
- Developing lesson plans that meet PFI educational objectives
- Managing student questions, misunderstandings, and performance challenges
#2. Confined-water and stamina training
In the pool, you’ll refine both personal performance and your ability to coach others. You’ll work on:

- Conducting pool site briefings and setting expectations for students
- Demonstrating skills with instructor-level clarity and precision
- Coaching students through static and dynamic apnea sessions
- Managing simulated problems such as LMC or shallow-water blackout
- Evaluating student technique and giving corrective feedback
- Completing required stamina benchmarks such as the 800 m snorkel, 400 m swim, and static/dynamic performance standards
#3. Open-water teaching and evaluation
You’ll conduct and assist open-water sessions that mirror real teaching conditions. This phase includes:

- Leading constant weight dive briefings and in-water skill demonstrations
- Managing student safety teams and coordinating proper recovery breathing
- Running open-water teaching scenarios and meeting PFI performance standards
- Handling unexpected issues such as equalization problems, early turns, or stress responses
- Driving rescue scenarios, including surface and underwater problem management
- Completing final evaluations to confirm readiness to teach as a lead instructor
Gear expectations for the Freediver Instructor course
Gear is available for rent through Nanaimo Dive Outfitters if needed. During the course, you’ll work with:

- Snorkel suitable for training and rescue scenarios
- Long-blade freediving fins
- Wetsuit appropriate for local conditions
- Weight belt and freediving weights
- Safety lanyard and line-based training system
- Timing and depth-tracking tools
As an instructor candidate, you’ll spend considerable time demonstrating skills, coaching students, and performing safety procedures. Using gear that fits well and supports efficient movement helps you stay focused on teaching, evaluation, and rescue performance throughout the course.

Freediver Instructor Course FAQ
How much teaching experience do I need before enrolling?
You don’t need to have formally taught full courses, but you must have experience assisting, demonstrating skills, and managing students at the Supervisor or Assistant Instructor level.
Do I need professional liability insurance to teach after certification?
Yes. Once certified and active, you’ll need appropriate professional liability insurance for any region where you plan to teach.
How soon after finishing the course can I begin teaching?
Once your certification is processed and your professional status is active, you can begin offering PFI Freediver programs immediately.
Do instructors need their own rig and teaching equipment?
Eventually yes. During the course, you may use facility equipment, but teaching independently requires owning a reliable set of freediving gear and safety tools.
How deep must I be comfortable diving before enrolling?
You should already meet Intermediate-level depth standards with confidence, showing consistent technique at 25–40 meters before attempting advanced teaching evaluations.
Does the course teach how to evaluate student anxiety or emotional readiness?
Yes. You’ll learn to identify stress indicators and how to adjust briefings, progressions, and conditions to maintain student safety.
How do I maintain active Instructor status each year?
You must meet PFI renewal requirements, maintain insurance where required, teach at least the minimum number of courses, and stay current with any updated standards.
